The Department of Biological Sciences aims to deliver comprehensive biological education to students. This is achieved through diverse lecture courses covering molecular, physiological, and ecological perspectives. Hands-on laboratory sessions teach students experimental design, modern equipment operation, and data analysis techniques. Additionally, students develop scientific communication abilities by evaluating research papers, composing lab reports and research documents, and engaging in oral presentations and discussions. The department actively promotes undergraduate research opportunities with faculty mentors, both at Barnard and across New York City institutions.
Biology majors can choose among five specialized pathways, known as tracks. Options include a General Biology Major or four focused concentrations: Cellular & Molecular, Physiological & Organismal, Ecological & Evolutionary, or Computational Biology. Each track shares core foundational coursework and culminates in a senior capstone experience, as detailed in subsequent requirements.
