B.A., Set Design Concentration delves into the artistic principles of set design for theater, musicals, opera, dance, and commercial productions, alongside production design and art direction for film and television. Students engage with these concepts theoretically in classrooms and studios while gaining hands-on experience through participation in mainstage productions of music, theater, and dance. Beyond coursework, students initially serve as assistants before advancing to lead designer roles throughout their program journey.
Alongside the broader CSU Theatre Program Learning Objectives, the Set Design Concentration features these specialized goals:
SET DESIGN FOR THEATRE, FILM, AND INDUSTRY: Master foundational to advanced techniques employed by set designers and crafts professionals for constructing scenery across stage, dance, film, and industrial productions. This encompasses research methods, terminology, industry standards, varied artistic styles, and the integration of skills like design, drafting, model-making, scenic painting, digital design tools, and innovative technologies.
DESIGN ARTISTRY: Cultivate the role of the Set Designer as both a collaborative artist and creative leader by honing organizational, technical, and imaginative abilities to bring productions from initial concept to final staging, while compiling a professional portfolio of design and technical work.
