The Department of Applied Science is an interdisciplinary graduate program primarily centered on Ph.D. studies, while also providing select M.S. degree options. Students can tailor both degrees to specialize in various concentrations across physical and natural sciences. Each graduate works closely with their advisory committee to design a personalized academic path aligned with their career aspirations. Our diverse student body brings varied backgrounds and professional objectives to the program. The graduate experience combines structured coursework, faculty mentorship, peer collaboration, and seminar participation to foster academic growth. The curriculum's flexible structure allows each student, in consultation with their advisory committee, to create a customized course plan.

To earn their degree, candidates must complete their faculty-approved course requirements and demonstrate mastery of their chosen field through a comprehensive qualifying exam. Additionally, students must conduct significant original research, with their dissertation requiring committee approval and successful defense in a public oral examination.

When applying for graduate study, it is standard practice in the United States to require all applicants to have a minimum of sixteen years of schooling and an earned degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. On occasion, graduates of three-year postsecondary programs in prestigious international universities may be well qualified for admission to a graduate program at William & Mary.
Upon the recommendation of the graduate program to which you are applying, the TOEFL/IELTS requirement can be waived for applicants who will have received a degree from a college or university in which English is the primary language of instruction. A transcript is required as evidence of successful instruction in English as a primary language. Contact the graduate program to which you are applying to request such a waiver.
