Dartmouth's engineering PhD candidates develop specialized expertise in their focus area while broadening their understanding of adjacent disciplines. The program equips graduates with engineering proficiency alongside critical abilities in analytical thinking, effective communication, calculated risk-taking, leadership, and human-focused innovation. Beyond core coursework in applied mathematics and engineering, doctoral candidates engage in extensive multi-year research, typically embedded within broader interdisciplinary initiatives. Students collaborate with faculty advisors to design these research endeavors. The program features diverse specialization options with interconnected opportunities across engineering fields. Doctoral candidates craft personalized study plans that align with their academic passions without being limited by traditional subject divisions. Upon completing the program, PhD graduates can select one of six concentration areas for official transcript designation, pending confirmation by the Thayer registrar that all required coursework for that specialization has been fulfilled.
Applicants must hold a bachelor's or master's degree to be considered for the program.
Candidates whose native language is not English must submit test results for TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
