Exploring French and Francophone language, literature, culture, cinema, linguistics, and intercultural skills. Beyond developing reading, speaking, and writing abilities, the French major provides insight into influential literary works, philosophy, history, film, and popular culture from French-speaking regions. As an analytical language, French helps organize thoughts and sharpen critical thinking skills valuable for graduate studies and professional careers. With over 200 million speakers across five continents, French ranks as the second most studied foreign language after English. Given Africa's economic expansion—home to the largest population of French speakers—and Canada's role as a key U.S. trade partner (being officially bilingual), French is poised to grow as a major global language.
