The French and Italian Department mandates at least 21 major credit hours to be completed on campus at BYU for this degree. These credits may also fulfill BYU's 30-hour residency requirement for graduation.
The French Studies BA program begins with FREN 321. If necessary, students can take preparatory courses including FREN 101, 102, 201, and 202. Those with previous French language background should consult the French undergraduate advisor to determine the suitable starting level. Native speakers and returned missionaries usually begin with FREN 321, while FREN 202 might be better for individuals with limited language exposure.
Students are encouraged to engage in substantial French-language immersion experiences during their studies. Options include serving a mission, participating in Study Abroad programs, completing internships, or spending a term in the Foreign Language Student Residence.
