Fresno State is recognized by the US Department of Education as both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution, with significant representation from Hmong students. Our faculty includes tenured and tenure-track professors specializing in environmental and geosciences, supported by 3 full-time and numerous part-time lecturers who primarily teach general education courses. The Geology M.S. Program follows a traditional thesis-based structure, granting approximately 4 degrees annually—a number that continues to rise. Most graduates pursue careers in geological consulting or government science roles, while a smaller percentage advance to Ph.D. programs.
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences provides graduate-level coursework and research opportunities culminating in a Master of Science degree. The program caters to diverse career objectives, such as: (1) preparing students for Ph.D. programs in geology or related disciplines, (2) equipping graduates for professional geoscience roles in industry or government, and (3) enhancing earth science knowledge and teaching skills for secondary and junior college educators. Research specializations span multiple areas, including hydrology/hydrogeology/hydrogeochemistry, stream restoration, geophysics, tectonics, engineering geology, geomorphology, structural geology, volcanology/igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology/paleontology/stratigraphy, paleoclimatology, and high-temperature and stable isotope geochemistry.
