The program aims to deliver both foundational and specialized education in essential areas of surface and subsurface water science. More than 70 faculty members from the University, DRI, and organizations like the U.S. Forest Service and Agricultural Research Service lead investigations in diverse topics including contaminant movement (above and below ground), watershed dynamics, ecohydrology, water chemistry, climate change impacts, groundwater flow, unsaturated zone processes, surface water systems, and water resource management. This breadth offers students extensive study opportunities. Our intimate program size cultivates strong faculty-student connections. The Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences actively supports student participation in the Nevada Water Resources Association (NWRA) chapter and the international student water group (SAIWI).
Key focuses in Hydrogeology encompass groundwater contamination movement, water chemistry evolution, nutrient transport mechanisms, unsaturated zone processes, groundwater assessment techniques, and modeling approaches.
The program's goals help students efficiently complete their coursework and thesis projects while equipping them for successful careers in water-related professions. Graduates with an MS in hydrogeology gain comprehensive skills for conducting research, planning water systems, and working in regulatory roles across public and private sectors. Expected learning outcomes include: demonstrating fundamental hydrogeology proficiency,
effectively communicating concepts and findings through written, numerical, visual, oral, and digital formats,
conducting independent research within hydrogeological sciences, and
applying relevant quantitative methods, including statistical analysis and numerical modeling techniques specific to hydrogeology.
