The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures aims to foster multicultural awareness and language proficiency throughout the Central Valley. This involves equipping students with communication skills in key heritage languages such as German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. These languages serve as vital tools for engagement with Mexico, Central and South America, and the European Union, enhancing students' opportunities for international study and careers. Additionally, the department provides instruction in Greek and Latin, along with Classical Studies and Humanities programs.
For aspiring educators, the department features specialized tracks for French and Spanish middle/high school teachers, as well as bilingual/cross-cultural elementary education preparation. Community members can enroll in Italian, Portuguese, and other language courses. Academic offerings include majors and minors in French/Spanish, plus minors in German, Humanities, and Classical Studies. The department also partners with Linguistics to provide a Language Studies B.A. Option.
