Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in music must complete both the Basic Core Requirements and all specific requirements for their chosen music degree specialization. Additionally, they must satisfy the university's General Education requirements (48 units), which include remaining music degree prerequisites (such as the strong recommendation for vocal performance majors to complete two semesters of university-level French, German, or Italian) and Other Departmental Requirements to earn the B.A. (minimum 120 units). Music majors are required to meet with an assigned faculty advisor each semester prior to registering for music courses.
The Music Department offers undergraduate programs for aspiring professional performers, composers, and music educators, as well as those pursuing advanced degrees in performance and composition. It also delivers State-approved coursework for California's single-subject teaching credential in music, along with graduate programs for professional, academic, and K-12 or community college teaching careers. The department further supports community engagement and non-music majors through diverse musical exposure.
