The Marriage and Family Therapy Program at California State University, Chico aims to develop highly skilled, compassionate therapists through research-based education, cultural awareness, and client-focused approaches, preparing graduates for diverse mental health environments with hands-on learning experiences.
This three-year, 60-unit curriculum fulfills California's educational standards for Marriage and Family Therapist licensure (SB-33, Section 4980.36). It prepares professionals for careers in public mental health organizations, private practices, and related fields. Students develop practical skills through foundational lab courses and on-campus training at the Counselor Training Center (CTC), followed by field placements at community agencies. The program covers multiple therapeutic theories while highlighting universal principles across all practices. Clinical training focuses on three key areas: scholarly research, hands-on application, and personal development. The curriculum values self-care and personal growth as essential to professional development alongside academic achievement. Faculty serve as role models, demonstrating ethical standards, professionalism, and therapeutic passion.
