The department boasts a distinguished legacy of excellence in research, education, and community engagement. In 1994, when the American Psychology Society (APS) founded its applied division, the American Association of Applied and Preventive Psychology, UNO's psychology department was among the pioneering institutions to earn accreditation in applied psychology. The department's caliber is further demonstrated by its consistent success in securing external research funding for faculty projects.
Our graduate program aims to cultivate skilled applied scientists prepared for diverse career paths. Students pursuing a Master's degree develop competencies to support clinical psychologists and practice as mental health professionals, while doctoral candidates train for roles in academia, research, and professional service. All students benefit from close faculty mentorship through coursework, advisory committees, and various departmental engagements. Our faculty's modest size and collaborative spirit enable students to work closely with nearly every department member. The program offers both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Applied Psychology, with applicants choosing between MS-only or PhD tracks. While all PhD candidates earn an MS degree along their path, terminal MS students complete their program without a thesis. PhD applicants select between two specializations: Applied Developmental Psychology or Applied Biopsychology.
