The German Studies Department at Brown University features a Ph.D. program designed to offer a comprehensive understanding of key developments in German literature, culture, and critical theory from the modern era (1517 onward) while allowing students to pursue specialized research areas. This program mandates a secondary concentration comprising four carefully selected courses outside the department. Under the mentorship of the Director of Graduate Studies, students craft this focused curriculum in an area of their choosing. Potential specializations include Media Studies, History, Jewish Studies, Visual Arts, Philosophy, Music, or Theater. By leveraging the knowledge of distinguished scholars across these disciplines—both within and beyond German Studies—the program encourages an interdisciplinary approach to the field.
Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
