The Chemistry graduate program provides dynamic prospects for engaging in advanced scientific exploration across physical, inorganic, organic, biological, and nanoscale chemistry. Our department supports multiple well-funded research initiatives that serve as foundations for graduate thesis work. In their initial term, students complete four advanced courses, such as CHEM 2870, and select a faculty research mentor. First-year participants also benefit from fellowship funding without teaching obligations. A distinctive aspect of Brown's chemistry Ph.D. program is that most scholars commence their research by the second semester of year one. In subsequent terms, the research endeavor becomes the student's central focus, typically culminating in a doctoral dissertation within four to five years.
