The Chemistry Department provides both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs. The Ph.D. is awarded to candidates who demonstrate comprehensive understanding of contemporary chemistry principles and the capability to conduct autonomous research, evidenced by an approved doctoral dissertation. For the M.S., students may choose between submitting a qualifying Master's thesis (Plan I) or completing designated graduate courses along with passing an oral comprehensive exam (Plan II). Note that a Master's degree is not required for Ph.D. program admission.
UCI's inorganic and organometallic chemistry research spans diverse areas, including creating organometallic compounds for organic synthesis and industrial applications, developing materials using supramolecular and macromolecular inorganic components, and studying metal-enzyme interactions that produce greenhouse gases. Students gain hands-on experience with various instruments (such as multinuclear NMR, X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry equipment) and practical methods (including air-sensitive compound manipulation, thin film fabrication, protein modification techniques, and polymerization processes).
