The Doctor of Philosophy program is available in inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical/environmental chemistry. As the most advanced degree conferred by U.S. institutions, the Ph.D. represents a research-focused achievement. This distinction isn't granted merely for finishing coursework, but rather when candidates prove their comprehensive understanding of chemistry's core principles and capacity for innovative research in their specialization. At the University of Montana, each student's Ph.D. requirements are customized by an advisory committee based on individual background, objectives, and academic focus, with strong emphasis placed on interdisciplinary studies.

Qualification Requirements

Undergraduate preparation should be equivalent to the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry at the University of Montana. However, a student deficient in undergraduate preparation but who exhibits potential as a graduate student may be admitted on a provisional basis. Such a student may make up deficiencies after starting the graduate program, but doing so will lengthen the time necessary for completing the degree.

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit an acceptable English language proficiency test score. For applicants whose native language is not English, the applicant must have a minimum TOEFL IBT (IBT Home Edition also accepted) 80, IELTS - 6.5
