The Applied Mathematics concentration enables students to explore mathematical approaches to challenges in physical, life, and social sciences as well as engineering. Core mathematical tools for Applied Mathematics derive from diverse areas depending on the specific problems: differential equations (both ordinary and partial), matrix algebra, statistical methods, probability theory, decision analysis, risk assessment, and actuarial science, among others. This concentration attracts individuals with varied interests, from those seeking strong quantitative skills for professional applications to those fascinated by the fundamental methodologies themselves. The standard program culminates in either an A.B. or Sc.B. degree, with options for combined programs in biology, computer science, or economics.
This honors program overview pertains to Applied Mathematics (APMA) concentrators and joint programs in APMA-Biology, APMA-Computer Science (with primary APMA advisor), and APMA-Economics (with primary APMA advisor). Prospective honors candidates should ideally identify a thesis advisor before senior year begins. To formally declare honors intent, students must develop a written thesis proposal, secure both a faculty advisor and second reader (with at least one being an Applied Mathematics faculty member), and submit a completed Honors Declaration Form to Jean Radican in the APMA Department.
