The Dance specialization within the Theatre Arts and Performance Studies program immerses students in exploring movement, dance, and various kinesthetic performance styles. This track focuses on developing dance skills, creative choreography, and examining the cultural theories and histories behind worldwide dance traditions. Students will analyze how diverse dance forms express cultural identity, bridge differences, and preserve historical heritage. The curriculum includes technical training, composition classes, and opportunities to participate in departmental productions, positioning dance within the broader context of performing arts.
The Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies (TAPS) serves as both an academic and creative hub for investigating performance across cultures—encompassing theater, dance, spoken word, time-based media, and everyday performative behaviors. TAPS provides three interconnected focus areas: Performance Studies, Theatre Arts, and Dance. Students experience multiple performance disciplines—including acting, directing, dance, and playwriting—before selecting their primary focus. Those interested in performance addressing social challenges can participate in the Engaged Scholars Program. All graduates leave with technical proficiency, historical knowledge, and an understanding of performing arts' cultural significance.
