The Bachelor of Fine Arts program provides a holistic, integrated approach to dance education. Students earn the B.F.A. through an immersive three-year curriculum with two additional summer sessions. Transfer students must fulfill all departmental requirements. Technique instruction focuses on alignment fundamentals that promote optimal body mechanics. Weekly schedules incorporate somatics and yoga to reinforce these principles. First-year studies encompass dance composition, anatomical movement science, and music fundamentals. The second year builds upon this foundation while introducing dance history, acting techniques, improvisation, music appreciation, and advanced composition - synthesizing first-year musical and compositional skills. Third-year students join the Second Avenue Dance Company, focusing on performance and choreography while integrating acquired knowledge. Electives allow for specialized study. Alongside departmental coursework, students complete required academic classes.
Prospective Tisch School of the Arts students must gain dual admission: both to their chosen department and to New York University. Undergraduate applicants should submit materials through the Common Application. Following submission, NYU Undergraduate Admissions will provide audition details for the Dance Department via email.
