The Portuguese and Brazilian Studies undergraduate program takes an interdisciplinary approach, enabling students to collaborate with both departmental faculty and experts in connected disciplines. Language serves as the gateway to cultural understanding and deeper exploration of the diverse Portuguese-speaking world, making arts-based interdisciplinary learning methods central to the undergraduate curriculum. Throughout the academic term, students at various levels engage in diverse activities including digital storytelling, creative composition, rigorous literary examination, theatrical presentations, short documentary production, and visual arts creation. Each semester culminates in a Performance and Exhibit night, where students from all courses showcase their projects, celebrating academic achievements and fostering community connections through public displays of their creative and scholarly work.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
