Brown University's Ethnic Studies program focuses on exploring the historical experiences of various racial communities both within and beyond U.S. boundaries, addressing themes like diaspora, migration, activism, and the economic systems that shape social disparities and racial identity. Students in this program develop expertise in diverse analytical frameworks for understanding race and ethnicity through multiple academic lenses, culminating in an original research project or creative endeavor. This interdisciplinary concentration offers comparative perspectives on how racial and ethnic identities form within societal, cultural, historical, political, and economic frameworks.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
