Students can achieve honors in their concentration by completing and presenting a thesis. Typically, they'll register for COLT 1990 during one or both semesters of their senior year to prepare it. These courses don't count toward the standard concentration requirements. To qualify for honors, students usually need to earn more A's than B's in Comparative Literature courses (or receive comparable faculty evaluations for S/NC courses). It's advisable to start considering an Honors Thesis during the third year of study. Those planning to study abroad in their junior year should contemplate these requirements beforehand and might consider contacting professors overseas to outline potential thesis ideas. Ideally, creating a summer reading list for thesis research can help build momentum before senior year begins. The Department requires two thesis readers, with at least one affiliated with Comparative Literature. Students should consult faculty about both the thesis topic and practical aspects like deadlines for readings and drafts, expected consultation frequency, and other logistical details. Clear communication about these expectations is essential for all involved.
