The PhD in Religion program aims to cultivate exceptional scholars who will excel in research, teaching, and contributing to academic institutions and society. Its curriculum prepares students to conduct rigorous academic work in their specialized fields while staying attuned to significant developments in religious studies. While led by the Department of Religion faculty, the program also involves graduate faculty from other GRS departments and BU schools. Faculty emphasize strong methodology and theoretical exploration, with many focusing on interreligious dynamics and boundaries.
Prospective PhD students should have a Religious Studies major (or related field) or demonstrate through transcripts advanced study in one religious tradition and introductory coursework in multiple traditions.
