The Religious Studies graduate program at the University of Texas focuses on examining religious phenomena through cultural and historical lenses. Our approach emphasizes research guided by theoretical frameworks and analytical inquiries, utilizing appropriate methodologies. While student research projects don't require explicit comparative elements, we acknowledge comparison as fundamental to our field, shaping our theoretical perspectives. Students should be capable of drawing comparisons across different traditions, cultures, or geographical areas while mastering pertinent theories and demonstrating thorough comprehension of their research's social and historical contexts. This entails proficiency in relevant languages and competence in multiple methodological approaches. We actively promote utilizing the extensive theoretical, historical, and linguistic resources within our department and across the wider University of Texas community.
All students must have earned a bachelor's degree prior to registration. In addition, note that:
We offer the M.A. as the first step toward completion of the Ph.D.; we do not offer a terminal M.A. degree.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
