The University of California, Santa Barbara's Department of Religious Studies provides graduate-level programs in South Asian religions for both M.A. and Ph.D. candidates. Students focusing on South Asian religions must develop proficiency in the historical, textual, and linguistic aspects of these traditions while also gaining insight into modern challenges within South Asian religious and cultural contexts. When admitted to the Religious Studies graduate program, each student receives guidance from a faculty mentor to design a customized study plan aligned with their specific South Asian specialization. After choosing their primary faculty advisor to lead their M.A. or Ph.D. committee, this advisor takes over the mentoring responsibilities from the initial faculty mentor.
