Boston University's PhD program in Educational Studies prepares students to advance knowledge in teaching and learning through rigorous research.
This program enhances graduate students' expertise to prepare them for careers in academia, research, and policy development across higher education institutions. Students engage in structured learning that combines specialized coursework, research projects, and active participation in academic communities within the program, university, and professional field.
PhD candidates in Educational Studies choose from four concentration areas:
Educational Policy Studies
Language and Literacy Education
Mathematics and Science Education
Special Education
Participants collaborate closely with Wheelock faculty as research or teaching assistants while developing their expertise through coursework, residency requirements, and scholarly investigation.
The program requires completion of at least 66 credit units.
Program Objectives
Graduates of the Educational Studies PhD program will:
Develop specialized knowledge in their chosen discipline and apply it to solve significant educational challenges.
Acquire advanced research skills (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods) to conduct original studies while gaining the ability to critically evaluate relevant literature using various methodological approaches.
