The Latin American Studies (LAS) program offers students a flexible and robust framework for gaining comprehensive knowledge about the rich diversity and intricate dynamics of Latin America. This region encompasses 20 sovereign nations in the Western Hemisphere located south of the United States, where Spanish, French, or Portuguese serve as official languages. The curriculum is inherently interdisciplinary, incorporating specialized courses from various departments taught by faculty experts in disciplines such as archaeology, economics, history, art history, music studies, international affairs, political science, romance languages, geography, political economy, public health, and sociology.
The program blends studies across historical, cultural, and modern perspectives with a capstone course co-taught by LAS faculty members. It also requires significant Spanish or Portuguese language study to achieve practical fluency in a key regional language. LAS faculty provide personalized guidance to each major, ensuring academic alignment between students' interests and their course selections.
