Auburn University's dietetic education program began in 1921, following the establishment of the American Dietetic Association in 1917, which committed the field to assisting government efforts in food conservation and enhancing public health and nutrition. The Nutrition/Dietetics track equips students to meet the qualifications for becoming both a Registered Dietitian (RD) and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). This pathway readies students for diverse roles in clinical nutrition, community health initiatives, public wellness programs, nutritional counseling, food service administration, and corporate nutrition sectors. The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition/Dietetics includes a two-year foundational phase followed by a two-year Professional Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). Upon completing the DPD, graduates become eligible to pursue supervised practice programs (such as dietetic internships), a necessary step before taking the national registration exam to obtain RD/RDN certification.
