The PhD program in population health integrates diverse academic fields, highlighting the multifaceted elements influencing community health and wellness. This curriculum examines how healthcare systems intersect with various societal sectors—such as business, government, nonprofits, media, and academia—to collectively shape public health results.
Core coursework builds expertise in systems science, quantitative/qualitative research methodologies, epidemiology, biostatistics, and ethics. Students gain hands-on practice through fieldwork and must produce original dissertation research in population health.
Learners customize their academic path by selecting one of four specialized concentrations: health equity, complex adaptive systems, urban health environments, or dissemination and implementation science.
The health equity specialization prepares doctoral candidates to perform compassionate research that values the real-world experiences of communities facing health inequities. Using a strengths-based framework, students partner with populations to enhance health outcomes by tackling root social causes of health disparities.
