Our innovative, cross-disciplinary method unites faculty and research students across artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and philosophy, making Sussex an ideal environment for cognitive science research. You can pursue either a PhD or MPhil degree. These programs vary in length and research scope. A PhD requires significant original contributions to your field's knowledge base, while an MPhil involves independent research at a more introductory level, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. You may have the option to upgrade from MPhil to PhD during your studies.

Qualification Requirements

Degree requirements: You’re normally expected to have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above. Subject-specific requirements: Your qualification should be in a subject relevant to your chosen area of research. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic) High level (6.5 overall, including at least 6.0 in each component); TOEFL (iBT) - 88 overall, including at least 20 in Listening, 19 in Reading, 21 in Speaking, 23 in Writing.
