This three-year doctoral program equips you with the essential skills and practical training required to qualify as a Clinical Psychologist under the UK Health and Care Professions Council.
Clinical Psychologists offer therapeutic assistance to individuals facing mental health challenges across diverse environments, from NHS mental and physical healthcare facilities to community organizations and charitable sectors. They collaborate with patients, relatives, professional teams, and healthcare providers to enhance psychological support and wellness, while promoting inclusivity and cultural sensitivity.
As a participant, you'll serve as a full-time NHS employee with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CVUHB) while simultaneously pursuing postgraduate research at Cardiff University. Your training will involve placements across healthcare networks in southern, central, and western Wales, working alongside patients, caregivers, and multidisciplinary teams. The curriculum focuses on cultivating leadership abilities within interdisciplinary environments and emphasizes building personal resilience and self-care practices.
The initial two years typically involve placements within affiliated health boards, with third-year students often pursuing specialized training opportunities throughout South Wales and occasionally in other regions or internationally.
Established in 1975, this HCPC-approved and BPS-accredited program also holds Level 1 certification from the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP) and foundational accreditation from the Association of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT).
Designed for psychology graduates (or equivalent) with eligibility for BPS Graduate Basis for Chartered membership, successful completion qualifies graduates to register with the HCPC and apply for Chartered Clinical Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society.
