Established in 1998, the Institute of Sound Recording has gained global recognition as a premier hub for psychoacoustic engineering research, boasting cutting-edge facilities and substantial support from research organizations and industry partners. Our fundamental mission remains clear: enhancing audio quality. We focus on understanding human perceptions of sound quality, especially in high-fidelity music reproduction. Our interdisciplinary approach integrates acoustics, digital signal processing, psychoacoustic theory and experimentation, psychology, sound synthesis, software development, statistical methods, and interface design - all informed by musical aesthetics.
We develop solutions for situations where evaluating audio quality through human perception is essential yet challenging, along with complementary tools for necessary quality adjustments. Broadly speaking, we create perceptually-driven systems for signal analysis, processing, and control. The Department of Music and Media has expanded its facilities, while our Performing Arts Technology Studios have undergone upgrades alongside a £1.7 million investment in advanced production and media spaces.
Our Sound Recording PhD program equips students for every project phase, offering rigorous graduate training tailored for professional advancement, available in both full-time and part-time formats. We also offer MPhil studies, which differ from PhDs in the scope, innovation, and impact of the research undertaken.
Your research journey begins with an extensive examination of existing academic literature, culminating in a critical analysis report. This document's findings will guide your subsequent experimental work, typically designed to validate hypotheses developed during your literature review.
