Internationally recognized, the School of Literature and Languages adopts a multidisciplinary research approach, examining languages and linguistic environments across the globe. Our work in theoretical and applied linguistics primarily explores the implications of linguistic diversity. Postgraduate research investigates language structure and practical applications of linguistic studies, with applied linguistics addressing areas like: multiculturalism and mobility, multilingual practices in business and education, intercultural communication, second language acquisition, and lexicography with corpus linguistics.
The Surrey Morphology Group, based within our school, specializes in theoretical morphology, typological studies, and language documentation, serving as a leading linguistics research hub.
Our research keeps pace with the discipline's dynamic nature, addressing technology-mediated language processes alongside ethical considerations in the rapidly changing language services field. Established in 1982, we've secured distinguished research grants that have furthered translation and interpreting theory while ensuring practical relevance through studies on human-technology collaboration, emerging audiovisual translation methods, and innovative approaches.
