Pursue a PhD or MPhil in Heritage at the University of Stirling and become part of an energetic research community, guided by faculty who are globally recognized experts. You'll join an active group of emerging scholars in a forward-thinking, cross-disciplinary research setting. Students gain access to the University's Centre for Environment, Heritage and Policy and the Interdisciplinary Research Programme in Cultural Heritage, along with our collaborations with the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage and the National Trust for Scotland. Our research directly influences heritage policies and practices while enhancing community wellbeing. We investigate how collective memories of the past are shaped and debated through various forms of physical and cultural heritage, which we view as deeply interconnected. Additionally, we study heritage's relationship with contemporary global challenges like nationalism, sustainability, diversity, decolonization, climate change, and disaster response. Working alongside heritage practitioners, local communities, and organizations, we address core concepts such as authenticity, memory, identity, and place, while also engaging in practical research involving conservation, value assessment, museum studies, reconstruction, and community-based approaches.
