Sustainable heritage research focuses on preserving and managing cultural heritage while examining its role in driving sustainable progress across social, economic, and environmental spheres. These concepts have rapidly gained prominence across management disciplines, scientific fields, and the heritage industry. The UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage develops practical, sustainable approaches to heritage challenges, collaborating with partners on pioneering interdisciplinary research and innovative educational programs for tomorrow's heritage professionals. Research forms the foundation of the UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage. Our interdisciplinary approach integrates physical sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities to create sustainable solutions for real-world heritage issues. Our faculty possess wide-ranging expertise spanning three key domains: heritage management, heritage science, and heritage policy. Additional research details are available on our website.

As an MPhil/PhD candidate with us, you'll conduct original research in sustainable heritage, leading to either an MPhil or PhD dissertation. Joining the UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage means becoming part of a vibrant, diverse doctoral community and participating in our monthly research seminar series. Throughout UCL, you'll benefit from extensive self-directed and structured training opportunities provided by the Doctoral School.

Qualification Requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject, is essential. Exceptionally: where applicants have other suitable research or professional experience, they may be admitted without a Master's degree; or where applicants have a lower second-class UK Honours Bachelor's degree (2:2) (or equivalent) they must possess a relevant Master's degree to be admitted. We expect any successful application to include a sufficiently strong and convincing proposal, and those holding a Master's degree are typically well prepared to provide one. Relevant work experience is highly desirable. Overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the subtests. Overall score of 92 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 20/30 in speaking and listening.
