The PhD program involves three years of full-time research, culminating in an 80,000-word thesis that must demonstrate academic rigor, substantial contribution, clear significance, and clarity of expression (accounting for what can reasonably be achieved within a three-year timeframe). The dissertation should include publishable-quality material. Most doctoral applicants typically hold a Master's degree. Those without this qualification will need to complete the MLitt program first. If uncertain about eligibility for the PhD, prospective students should consult the Postgraduate Secretary.
The School of Classics is internationally recognized for its research excellence in Greek and Latin literature, ancient history, art, archaeology, classical philosophy, and the reception of classical works. Ambitious graduates typically enroll either for the three-year PhD program or the one-year MLitt, which serves both as preparation for doctoral studies and as an independent postgraduate degree.
