As part of the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy, we maintain strong interdisciplinary connections with Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical and Computing Sciences, and Medicine departments across the University. Our diverse student body travels from around the globe to investigate Scottish, European, and World History spanning from the Middle Ages to modern times.
Specializations encompass Scottish and European History, Global History, Scandinavian History and Culture, Early Modern and Medieval Europe, Poland-Lithuania, Enlightenment Studies, the History of Ideas, Religion, Philosophy and Science - all guided by internationally renowned scholars in their respective fields.
Established in 1495 by Bishop Elphinstone, the University boasts exceptional library collections and extensive archival resources for historical research. These include records of the Catholic Church in Scotland, documents on Northeast Scotland's social and cultural heritage, scientific history archives, and numerous collections exploring Scotland's role in European history. Aberdeen offers doctoral candidates a distinctive research setting, complete with postgraduate training opportunities and vibrant research seminar programs.
