PhD candidates receive training to become interdisciplinary scholars, typically guided by co-supervisors from two distinct departments. Their research projects span multiple academic fields, covering disciplines such as Archaeology, Art and Architectural History, various branches of History (including social, economic, political, cultural, ecclesiastical, and intellectual), Literature (encompassing Old and Middle English, Old Norse, Latin, Italian, and Arabic), Natural Sciences, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Viking Studies, Islamic Cultures, Codicology, and Palaeography.
Under regular supervision, you'll develop and execute an original research project. This process provides expertise in a specialized area examined through dual disciplinary lenses, while cultivating skills in primary research, argument development, and thesis writing.
This rigorous preparation equips graduates for academic positions and diverse professional paths requiring advanced research capabilities, critical analysis, and strong communication skills.
York's PhD program fosters collaborative opportunities and the development of global academic connections.
