As an MA (Hons) French student, you'll refine advanced language and communication abilities by exploring French and Francophone linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The program offers research-focused specializations spanning medieval to contemporary works, political and cultural studies, performance arts, intellectual history, postcolonial theories, gender studies, film adaptations, modern French philosophy, creative composition, and translation studies. This four or five-year degree, administered by the School of Modern Languages, begins with foundational training in French language and cultural studies during the first two years, enhancing analytical reading, oral fluency, writing proficiency, and translation techniques. Your first year includes two supplementary subjects alongside French, typically continuing with at least one into the second year. Discover more about our academic structure. Third-year students may apply for exchange programs at our French partner universities, substituting St Andrews coursework with international study (optional). Alternatively, you can opt for an integrated year abroad before completing two Honours years.
