Across both the School of History, Archaeology and Religion and the School of Modern Languages, our goal is to cultivate globally-minded individuals who think critically, appreciate cultural diversity, and possess versatile skills. The 4-year BA in History and Modern Languages program enhances advanced communication and analytical abilities while building resilience through immersive foreign language experiences. The history component allows you to tailor your historical interests, examining the past with a critical perspective while engaging with contemporary public debates. Our faculty expertise covers an exceptional range of societies, eras, and regions, including the British Isles, Europe (both eastern and western), Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Our diverse module offerings let you explore traditional fields like political, social, cultural, and gender history, or discover emerging areas such as environmental or digital history. For languages, you can select Chinese, French, or Spanish. We offer two learning tracks: an Upper Elementary pathway for students with A-level equivalent proficiency, and an Elementary pathway for beginners. You'll study your chosen language within its broader social, political, historical, and cultural contexts, with particular emphasis on cultural diversity. Our dynamic curriculum supports linguistic and cultural adaptability, using varied resources and interactive methods to develop comprehensive language competencies. A key feature of this program is the overseas experience, where you'll either study at a partner institution or undertake a work placement in your target language environment. Career Opportunities Graduates emerge with valuable academic and practical skills - including teamwork, leadership, and communication - along with the confidence to apply them. These qualities make our graduates highly employable across diverse fields. We're dedicated to supporting your professional aspirations in today's competitive job market. Whether you have clear career goals or are exploring options, we provide comprehensive guidance and resources. From your first day, we encourage forward-thinking about post-university life, offering specialized modules and support to give you a competitive edge, whatever path you pursue.
