As an MA (Hons) French student, you'll refine your language and communication abilities to an advanced level. The program offers exploration of specialized subjects such as French linguistics, literary works, cultural studies, historical contexts, political systems, and cinematic arts. In your third year, you can participate in study abroad opportunities at one of the University's Erasmus partner institutions in France. Those who undertake this international experience acquire not only practical teaching and tutoring skills but also enhance their language proficiency, cross-cultural understanding, and personal growth. The MA (Hons) French degree also offers a five-year variant incorporating a mandatory year abroad. This integrated international year allows students to work in a Francophone environment between their second and third years. The curriculum involves advanced study of both French and German through research-focused teaching, enabling students to comprehend how academic knowledge evolves and progresses. The program fosters independent scholarship characterized by inquisitiveness, precision, academic integrity, and thoroughness. This four-year course culminates in a Master of Arts (Honours) degree. Like all St Andrews programs, it consists of modular components worth academic credits. Participants must complete 480 credits across the program duration, typically accumulating 120 credits annually. The initial two years generally combine compulsory program-specific modules with elective options (sometimes including interdisciplinary selections). Subsequent years focus on specialized, research-oriented study through discipline-specific advanced modules.
