The MA (Hons) in English is a four-year program offered by the School of English. During the initial two years, students explore diverse literary works spanning various genres from medieval times to contemporary literature. This foundation provides comprehensive literary exposure and critical analysis skills essential for specialized honors-level studies. The curriculum includes advanced, research-focused coursework in Comparative Literature and English, fostering an appreciation for how academic knowledge evolves. Students develop independent learning habits characterized by curiosity, precision, and scholarly rigor. This 48-month course culminates in a Master of Arts (Honors) degree. Like all St Andrews programs, it comprises credit-based modules requiring 480 total credits (typically 120 per year). The first two years combine core program requirements with elective options (sometimes including cross-faculty courses), while subsequent years focus on specialized, research-driven studies within the discipline.
