This course seeks to ignite enthusiasm and deep expertise in literary and cultural works spanning from medieval times to contemporary periods, exploring authors ranging from the West Midlands region to global perspectives. Why select this program? The curriculum is designed to cultivate appreciation and understanding of literary and cultural texts across centuries, featuring writers from local to international backgrounds. Additionally, the program facilitates exploration of English language structures across diverse contexts while highlighting the political and ideological dimensions of language, literature, and culture within various social and historical frameworks, particularly regarding gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, class, and disability. Another key objective is nurturing ethical considerations in reading, writing, and linguistic analysis, fostering awareness of equality, diversity, and inclusion in literary and cultural studies. Students will engage in critical reflection on literary/linguistic creation, reception, value, and cultural significance. The program further develops comprehension of literary forms, aesthetics, genres, and purposes while strengthening communication skills for professional advancement. By integrating language and literature studies, students enhance critical thinking, creativity, analytical abilities, research methods, and problem-solving skills for academic and career success. Ultimately, the course empowers students to confidently express their perspectives in academic, professional, and societal contexts. The Foundation year equips students for university-level education, with successful completion granting access to various Humanities or Media BA (Hons) programs, including specialized or combined degree options in English Literature, Language, Creative Writing, Linguistics, or Media. Initial Foundation modules focus on transferable study techniques, followed by specialized Humanities/Media explorations in subsequent semesters. The degree program enhances critical/creative thinking, analytical prowess, research capabilities, and problem-solving skills for academic and professional achievement. It empowers students to articulate their views effectively in educational, workplace, and social environments. Graduates develop highly sought-after competencies in critical analysis, evidence assessment, argument formulation, and problem resolution, making them valuable across employment sectors. Alumni frequently pursue postgraduate education (including Masters, teaching certifications, and PhDs) or enter diverse fields such as education, management, government, library sciences, social work, civil service, retail, nonprofit work, journalism, publishing, and professional writing.
