Our department ranks among the top 5 physics and astronomy programs in the Russell Group for research productivity. This world-class standing was reaffirmed by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Each student receives guidance from a dedicated supervisor to refine their research focus and joins one of our specialized research groups. Within these groups, you'll find engaged colleagues ready to provide feedback on your concepts, analyze findings, and offer support. The program includes access to graduate-level courses, specialized classes, and research seminars to expand your expertise. Additional learning opportunities include intensive workshops like those organized by the Institute of Physics and NATO Advanced Study Institutes, where leading scholars present and facilitate discussions. We actively support conference participation and collaborative research at premier facilities worldwide, including CERN and Chile's European Southern Observatory.
Physics PhD graduates enjoy diverse career pathways. Alumni pursue roles across various sectors, from non-scientific fields to UK-based scientific positions. Many continue with postdoctoral research, frequently in the US, Europe, or increasingly, Japan.
