The University of Leicester's Physics and Astronomy Department merges groundbreaking scientific discovery with exceptional educational standards in physics. With over 50 years of pioneering research and robust collaborations with global industries and partners, Leicester's vibrant scientific community explores the vast mysteries of our cosmos, spearheads robotic missions to investigate our Solar System's planets, and enhances our understanding of Earth's delicate climate. Doctoral candidates undertake an autonomous research initiative mentored by an advisory panel. Typically, full-time students complete their research within 3.0-3.5 years, while part-time students have 6.0-6.5 years. An additional year (full-time) or up to a seventh year (part-time) may be allocated for thesis preparation. The dissertation, capped at 50,000 words, must offer novel insights and include publishable material. Candidates must successfully defend their thesis in an oral examination to earn their degree.
