A Creative Writing PhD primarily involves independent research, with periodic supervisory meetings scheduled across the academic year.
While PhD programs don't include mandatory coursework, full-time candidates must participate in the Arts Faculty Researcher Skills training. Some doctoral candidates opt to sit in on relevant master's courses led by their advisors, though this remains optional and doesn't require graded work. The program culminates in a written dissertation of maximum 100,000 words, developed with guidance from faculty supervisors, followed by an oral defense (viva voce) where candidates present their work to an evaluation committee.
The creative dissertation typically features original creative pieces, which may take the form of a novel, poetry collection, short story anthology, dramatic work, or other approved creative format.
