Our Creative Writing Research programs offer distinctive, rigorous opportunities for established writers pursuing ambitious creative endeavors.
The newly introduced Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Doctor of Fine Arts (DFA) degrees expand upon our longstanding tradition of providing graduate and doctoral pathways in Creative Writing studies.
These research-based programs blend structured learning components (including literary seminars, practical workshops, and teaching methodologies) with personalized research supervision to foster your creative and analytical development. Both degrees provide focused, supported periods to produce significant creative output, feature chances to instruct undergraduate writing courses, and offer graduate teaching assistant roles in literature classes. The DFA program further enables extended scholarly investigation connected to your creative practice, culminating in a substantial critical essay or project. Participants benefit from mentorship by acclaimed authors like Carolyn Jess-Cooke, Colin Herd, and Louise Welsh, alongside literary scholars including John Coyle, Jane Goldman, and Helen Stoddart.
The University of Glasgow's Creative Writing program operates from the Edwin Morgan Writing Room, equipped with specialized literary resources and media collections. We host an extensive schedule of guest lectures, advanced workshops, and community events. The University Library's contemporary holdings and archival materials, including the Edwin Morgan Papers, serve as vital research assets. Our partnership with the Mitchell Library, among Europe's premier public libraries, enhances these resources. Weekly Creative Conversations during term time bring distinguished visiting speakers to our campus for engaging discussions.
