Our PhD program in Creative Writing provides a committed, encouraging, and highly acclaimed team of full-time supervisors specializing in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Our faculty features celebrated authors like Alan Warner (known for novels such as Morvern Callar and The Sopranos, along with film and theater adaptations), David Wheatley (poet behind Mocker and The President of Planet Earth, and a former judge for the National Poetry Competition), Helen Lynch (author of The Elephant and the Polish Question), Wayne Price (writer of Furnace and Fossil Record), and filmmaker Alan Marcus (creator of In Place of Death and 216 Beach Walk, Waikiki).
At the University of Aberdeen, students benefit from diverse interdisciplinary creative opportunities supported by research hubs like the WORD Centre for Creative Writing, the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies (which has hosted luminaries like Michael Longley and James Kelman), the Centre for the Novel (featuring guests such as Michele Roberts and Will Self), and the Sir Herbert Grierson Centre.
Our postgraduate programs include masterclasses with renowned visiting authors (recent participants include Claire Keegan, Don Paterson, and Simon Armitage). The WORD Centre also curates popular literary events during May Fest and maintains strong connections with the vibrant writing community in the northeast.
