Our PhD program in English with a Creative Writing focus fosters innovative methods in practice-driven literary scholarship. This pathway enables you to craft a significant research initiative that includes an original creative piece (in fiction, poetry, or alternative formats). As part of a dynamic postgraduate community, you'll receive guidance from internationally renowned specialists across diverse global and historical fields, while benefiting from exclusive resources like our letterpress workshop and visiting author program.
With your supervisor's mentorship, you'll produce a 30-40,000 word critical analysis alongside a creative work of appropriate scope (such as a full-length poetry collection, novel, or nonfiction work). Each term involves extensive self-directed study, complemented by regular supervisory meetings to discuss progress and refine your approach. Depending on your project's needs, you may conduct archival research or international fieldwork.
During your studies, you can participate in numerous research training workshops to develop archival and investigative techniques, alongside academic and creative seminars hosted by our research departments and the prestigious Writers at York program. This initiative features global speakers for scholarly presentations, author discussions, and professional networking.
Prospective students must submit a comprehensive research proposal with their application, including samples of both creative and analytical writing to demonstrate proficiency in both areas. The proposal should outline plans for the critical dissertation (30-40,000 words) and creative component (such as a book-length work), while establishing their conceptual connection.
All PhD candidates begin with provisional status, advancing to full enrollment after successfully completing their first-year progression review.
