We are a passionate and innovative team of scholars dedicated to studying literature within and outside the Western tradition, committed to inclusive research methods that examine issues of identity related to gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and culture. Our work reinterprets Shakespearean and early modern theater history by analyzing how Shakespeare's works were received and how marginalized groups—including women, queer individuals, and people with disabilities—engaged with early modern drama and society. Our nineteenth-century research focuses on unconventional studies of radical print culture, periodicals, press history, and the influence of visual art in both mainstream and lesser-known literary works. Additionally, we examine how Britain's colonial legacy shaped prominent authors like Dickens and Kipling.
A PhD program is designed for students seeking to develop an independent research project that makes an original contribution to their field. Studies can be pursued full-time or part-time, with intakes in October and January.
At the application stage, you only need to submit a preliminary research proposal. During the initial months of your program, you will refine this proposal under the mentorship of your supervisory team.
